SUNDAY

Iloved the house like this, so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat as the world slept around me. Silence was rare in my world. With five of us and a baby, there was almost always something happening in the house, so I appreciated these still moments in the rare times they found me. Turning the page of my book, I let the story unfold and take me into my favorite fantasy world. I’d read until Noah returned from his hunt, then he’d put me to bed like he always did.

Tonight we’d all stayed up and rang in the new year with champagne for them, sparkling cider for me, and drugging kisses at midnight. As soon as Kingston started yawning, I’d followed him to the bedroom and tried in vain to sleep. I couldn’t. Peace was eluding me, and I couldn’t put my finger on why. Any number of things could be contributing to my unrest. The pack having a larger than was comfortable number of dissenters. Caleb being so far from us. Alek’s absence. And then there was my sweet Eden. She was at risk, and I missed her so. This wasn’t at all how I imagined kicking off a new year.

A wave of longing for my child mixed with the love and excitement I felt for this new baby growing inside me. Would they also have to deal with an angry pack? Was their destiny going to be one filled with violence and challenge? My palm rested on my barely there bump.

“Not if I can help it, little one.”

A rustling at the door had me snapping my head in that direction, even though I couldn’t see it from my position in the living room. I glanced at the clock; it was just after two. Noah was back early. He probably sensed my unease and decided to come keep me company instead.

I smiled. Such a thoughtful mate. He deserved a reward, and I knew just the thing.

Letting the blanket fall to the floor as I stood, I went to the door to greet him.

But it wasn’t my Blackthorne prince waiting for me.

I gasped. “Caleb?”

My handsome husband stood in the foyer, snow dusting his shoulders and hair as he set his bags on the floor. He lifted his chin and brought his gaze to meet mine, a spark in those dark eyes and a wicked, almost boyish grin on his lips. “Miss me, wife?”

It wasn’t until his voice hit me that the spell rooting me in place broke. “Oh my God, you’re home!” I ran to him, flinging my arms around his neck and holding him tight.

“What have I told you about taking the lord’s name in vain, Miss Fallon?”

I giggled and pressed a kiss to his neck, inhaling the scent of him. He smelled like home, but also Ravenscroft, which I didn’t love. We’d wash that right off him as soon as possible.

“Why are you here? You didn’t tell me you were planning this yesterday when we spoke.”

“I couldn’t bear the thought of spending another day, let alone the new year, without you.
